Artist's Comment: enchanted rock, it's one of those places you only need to visit to know why everyone likes going there
due west of austin, not exactly nestled in the hill country, but more like embedded in it
literature says the massive rock dates back to the beginnings of texas time; much of the area of wimberley has that same ancient feel and look to it
but while wimberley is more streamed streaked, volcanoe pocked, and set with trees, enchanted rock borders on the transition between treed and rocky land
there's a soft side to the huge rock one can walk up to the top on, much like stone mountain in georgia, but while the latter is much like a trail through the trees, this is an undulating rising settling re-rising barren climb over pure stone
one will crest a rise thinking, "this'll be the top," only to plateau and see there's another rise of rock ahead; but once atop, the 360 is magnificent; and the walk / climb is soft enough a grade to be done in tennis shoes
the more adventurous can scale the much more vertical face (if it's allowed)
this poem illustrates something i like to do, which is struggle to fit sentence ending words that'll suggest an image or feeling on both the line they end, and the next line the ending word will color
though only a few lines were completed with that idea in this particular work, i like the way they add nuance, like a spot of color in the sky or distant horizon of a painting that adds to another layer of paint nearby
in the poem, the lines:
down the long horizon. Small
breaks, filtered soft light setting.
is an example.
in the related painting below, "road to lost maples state park," there's an alternating changing hues of blues and earth tones from the land's distance to the foreground that's kinda like that; plus it's lighter toned nearest plane, the lowest section of the canvas, picking up the similar toned sky at the top
in the other related painting, "wimberley," the colors among the lush foliage and richly reflecting water gain from each other's color nuances
related poem: "austin"
related paintings: "road to lost maples state park" & "wimberley" - both to be posted soon

Enchanted Rock
(Texas Hill Country)
Seven or eight vultures circled
in a tilt
to our left. The darkness
further - to the east,
was spreading
quickly
toward the giant birds.
To the west, clouds,
lines of rain falling,
formed gray curtains
down the long horizon. Small
breaks, filtered soft light setting.
Beneath us, the beginnings of
Texas time - Enchanted Rock,
rested, in secret slumbers.
Round the bare base, clumps
of rough rock, a few sheltering trees
waited, circling the small tent
with primal dreams.

Special notes:
The text presented in the photo example below is how we print, a more cursive pretty font that won't reprint well here.
Also, we adjust the font size of the title, copyright, personalization, to fit both the writing itself, and the constraints of the mat opening (window) of the 8x10's we use.
