Review: ArtExpo New York 2007

Day 5

Artist Update: January 6, 2008
the following is a repost of my newsletter mailing on march 5, 2007; any links now included have been added; other than any glaring grammatical errors or spelling, and any special notations such as "added note", all other text has been left as the original; thank you much

show's over; whew! mostly gave away our 18x24 posters for pr, found the right size boxes at a ups store underneath rockefeller ctr, got all the remaining paintings boxed sealed and sent via fed ex, still it'd taken over an hr & 1/2 to box everything right, then the line at the fedex shipping ctr there at the javitts ctr was HUGE, but finally, after another hr in line, the boxes were all taken in to send back home - what was neat (there' s a solid wall of glass in this area facing 11th ave) was just as they waved me over to start working on my boxes it started snowing! really hard in a side ways blowing wind, people were running outside to take their picture, it blew so hard it looked like a fan on a set might blowing fake snow, then the snow settled into a steady big flake fall and the sun came out, really, it was beautiful and made everyone in line who'd just been tired and grumpy kinda dopey smiley

for that sub-group receiving this last show update wanting the bottomline on the show, it was worth it, but barely; made some nice sales, met a ton of nice people and a few that might be mutually beneficial, got great info re glicees and canvas printing, and received confirmation re the current level of my work, but can't deny i was still a bit disappointed; we heard attendance was off, the on-going stock market problems are a Big discussion item here of course

the big commercial dealers wasted no time cutting prices on their less favored artists' works by as much as 75%! then started tearing down at noon two hrs ahead of schedule, very unprofessional and disruptive, but they pay the big fees and can call a few shots

but, yesterday, many of these same commercial dealers, once their first layer of paintings from their more well known artists had sold, also had begun to put their 2nd and 3rd tier artists' work out, and for me, the quality, inventiveness, edginess, and just plain appeal was much stronger, the compositions were less formulaic, the colors less perfectly matched, the style within the paintings less homogenous, they felt better, stronger

what sold best within the show? besides name artists people came to buy? (yes, i know, they're big because they sell :-) - bold very bright colors esp used in contemporary big brush applications of simple object scenes with hazy nebulous backgrounds; get you a big house brush, some cans of good acrylic house paint, add some medium densifier, a large canvas, and walaa! strong selling work, at least in ny; really you can do it :-) i will stick w/what i enjoy doing, painting my light palette colors that come out in an impressionist style, even while i admit that, though i may definitely be on track, my destination is a bit further than i'd first hoped :-)

if i ever attain also being a "name" artist, i won't begrudge the wait; if i don't reach that level of recognition, i also won't have felt i chased the wrong dream

this is the last of the daily updates; it's been fun, but now it's time for a couple days pure fun before sheila & i head back to our kitty cats cottonball & leo, they deny missing us, but we know better :-) for the final record, sheila & i went back to the local ? brewery pub we'd found across from the shell fish place, heartland brewery (added note: link on day 3), chose a tangerine twinged ale (in a modestly reduced ounce portion), grilled maui maui w/chunks of seasoned crab, split a cobb salad diced in a way we hadn't seen before (but still delicious), then walked down the street for fresh coffee and hot tea at a deli chain called europa cafe (added note: link on day 2)

once i'm back in austin, after a short bit, i'll try and post a picture of us in our booth plus the painting most recently finished of the view while rowing on barton springs

for the future? maybe a really nice canvas print, Big, equal to the size of the original, but enhanced with just enough paint to make the print feel "almost" original, at a very good price, probably of austin at night (added note: giclee made later in '07)

good night ya'll, hope this hasn't been too big a burden, enjoyed it

thanks ya'll,
